Insight into Substance Abuse in the LGBTQ Community
Addiction is a disease that affects every individual differently. Even when two individuals are addicted to the same substance or substances, the symptoms they experience will differ, as will be the process of detoxing and becoming sober. However, addiction’s damaging effects are indiscriminate, affecting people from all demographics. Research shows that addiction affects people of all ages, races, education levels, religious affiliations, financial standing, and sexual orientation. Currently, research into addiction treatment outcomes and addiction rates is increasing in the LGBTQ community.
Studies show that people who identify as LGBTQ have higher rates of alcohol and drug addiction than the heterosexual population. Researchers believe that the ongoing stigma surrounding sexual orientation and preference is a key reason for this disparity. Members of the LGBTQ community tend to experience more stress or stressful events than heterosexual individuals, increasing their risk of developing various mental and medical health conditions. Often, people turn to drugs or alcohol to manage the symptoms of these conditions, leading to addiction.
The most recent National Survey on Drug Use and Health (conducted in 2018) indicates that substance abuse patterns and instances of substance use disorders are higher among LGBTQ youth and adults. It suggests that as high as 9% of LGBTQ adults reported opioid abuse compared to just 4% of heterosexual adults in the United States. This is a significant problem since over 70% of all drug overdoses involve opioid use, and the rates of opioid abuse in the LGBTQ community are nearly twice as high as in other demographics.
Furthermore, research shows that addiction and substance use disorders are twice as prevalent among LGBTQ youth and adults compared to heterosexual youth and adults of the same age group. The same surveys indicate that members of the LGBTQ community are more likely to seek treatment for co-occurring disorders or dual-diagnosis, where one experiences a mental health condition and a substance use disorder simultaneously.

The Success of Personalized Treatment for the LGBTQ Community
Acknowledging addiction and seeking help is challenging, especially for those who identify as LGBTQ. The stigma surrounding everyday circumstances and events can make seeking help more difficult. Despite ongoing efforts to reduce these stigmas, significant work remains to be done. Encouragingly, social views are evolving and with these changes comes reduced stigma. Unfortunately, elevated addiction and overdose rates among LGBTQ youth, teens, and adults remain a widespread challenge due to specific stress-related factors.
It is not uncommon for people who identify as LGBTQ to avoid seeking addiction treatment at substance abuse treatment centers due to previous negative experiences seeking medical or mental health care. Additionally, learning about the negative experiences of friends and family can also deter individuals from seeking treatment. To combat these issues, Arrowwood Addiction Treatment Center offers LGBTQ-friendly residential treatment programs with personalized treatment plans tailored to fit the individual needs and goals of each patient. Rehabs that provide this type of specialized treatment have shown improved treatment outcomes for members of the LGBTQ community, compared to programs at non-specialized rehabs.
