What Does Addiction Treatment Look Like For College Students?
Experimenting with drugs and alcohol during college has become an accepted part of the college experience. With films and television shows glorifying alcohol and drug use, we have come to expect that college students will party. The reality is that drinking and using drugs at college is not as glamorous as we imagine it to be.
The question then becomes, when is drug and alcohol abuse for college students concerning? If a student finds that their use of drugs and alcohol is having a negative impact on their ability to complete their school work, or if they are missing classes from being hungover, they may benefit from speaking to someone about their use.
The Arrowwood Addiction Treatment Center for Recovery is here to provide college students with addiction treatment. Please contact us for more information.

Statistics on Drug Use among College Students
According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), 9% of full-time college students aged 18-22 met the criteria for an alcohol use disorder in 2019. More than 50% of college students in the same age group had consumed alcohol within the previous month. Among them, 33% reported binge drinking, which is classified as five or more drinks within two hours for men, and four or more drinks within two hours for women.
Binge drinking is common on college campuses, especially when playing drinking games. However, it can lead to serious health problems such as alcohol poisoning, motor vehicle accidents, drunk driving arrests, assaults, and other injuries related to alcohol. Shockingly, around 1,500 college students die each year due to alcohol-related injuries, including accidental injuries, alcohol poisoning, and car accidents. Additionally, research shows that one in five college women experience sexual assault during their time in college, and alcohol use is often a factor in these assaults. Lastly, the NIAAA estimates that students who binge drink three times a week are six times more likely to receive poor grades compared to their peers who do not binge drink. This could be due to being impaired during tests, hungover during exams, and not spending as much time studying as others.

Understanding College Student Addiction
Alcohol consumption on college campuses can be attributed to several factors. One of the main reasons is the societal perception that drinking is a normal part of the college experience. This mindset can lead to students downplaying their own drinking habits, which can then make it harder to notice potential issues with alcohol and drug abuse. The lack of early intervention can lead to prolonged struggles with addiction.
Easy access to alcohol and drugs is also a common issue on college campuses. It’s often readily available at parties or through older students, making it easier for students to fall into substance abuse.
For many students, college provides the first taste of freedom away from home. This newfound independence can be both exciting and overwhelming, as they balance academic responsibilities with newfound social activities. Regardless of their upbringing, college is a learning experience for all.

Exploring College Student Addiction: Education, Assessment, and Treatment
Fortunately, there has been a rise in efforts to educate, evaluate, and aid college students who may be grappling with alcohol and drug addiction. This can start with Resident Advisors, Professors, and the campus counseling center. Some students may profit from learning about the harms of binge drinking and the potential consequences that may follow. Rehab is appropriate for those who have progressed beyond experimenting with drinking and drugs to problematic use.
College student addiction treatment programs are comparable to standard drug and alcohol rehab programs. These programs include detox, inpatient rehab, intensive outpatient treatment, and outpatient treatment. If you choose to attend a detox and inpatient treatment program, you may need to take a temporary leave of absence from your studies to participate in treatment. While in treatment, you’ll likely reside at the treatment facility and participate in programming throughout the day, making it nearly impossible to attend classes or complete coursework.
College student rehab programs generally feature tailored programming designed for students. This may involve discussing how to handle the pressures of being a student and navigating social situations that may entail alcohol. This programming is typically integrated into the addiction treatment program provided at the treatment facility.

A Guide to Finding Addiction Treatment for College Students
College students struggling with addiction have access to several resources that can assist them in finding treatment. The college counseling center is one such resource that can help students locate local treatment providers. Given the prevalence of alcohol and drug use on college campuses, it’s no surprise that the counseling center is knowledgeable about addiction treatment options. They can provide information about different levels of care available in the area and advise on the appropriate type of treatment needed at that time. If there are no local addiction treatment providers, the counseling center can help students locate alternative options.
Another resource that college students can leverage when searching for treatment programs is their insurance provider. Cost is a major concern when looking for addiction treatment, and discussing in-network providers with the insurance provider can help individuals get an idea of what they would be financially responsible for. Students can quickly get in touch with their insurance provider by calling the number on the back of their insurance ID card or by logging into their website. Since each plan is unique, it’s essential to inquire about the specific treatment options covered.
