Alcohol Use Disorders in the United States: Understanding the Scope and Seeking Help
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse reports that approximately 17 million adults in the United States qualify for a diagnosis of an alcohol use disorder. Moreover, close to a million adolescents aged 12-17 also have alcohol use disorders of varying degrees. It’s important to note that alcoholism and alcohol use disorder, as identified in many addiction treatment settings, is not an illness that develops overnight. Unlike other substances that may lead to dependence or addiction after a single use, alcohol use disorders arise from long-term alcohol abuse.
While the occasional drink with friends or a beer with dinner is not a cause for concern for most adults, if finding or consuming alcohol becomes a top priority, then it may be time to seek help from alcohol rehab in Virginia. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), alcohol is one of America’s most commonly abused substances. Each year, alcohol-related causes are responsible for one out of every twenty deaths worldwide, and it is estimated that over 90,000 people in the U.S. die from alcohol-related causes annually. Shockingly, more than 30 of these deaths are due to the effects of alcohol poisoning. SAMHSA also reports that nearly 8% of American adults have an alcohol use disorder, but only a minority of them seek or receive addiction treatment at a Virginia inpatient alcohol rehab.

Recognizing Indicators and Manifestations of Alcoholism
Understanding the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) is critical to categorize alcohol dependence as mild, moderate, or severe. Problem drinking can be described in several ways, depending on how often, how much, and how one drinks. This manual provides detailed information on binge drinking, alcohol abuse, and alcohol dependence (alcoholism). To fully comprehend the signs and symptoms of alcoholism, one must grasp the various diagnostic categories.
Binge drinking is a prevalent issue across all age groups. The act of binge drinking is defined as consuming enough alcohol to bring your blood alcohol concentration to 0.08% in a single sitting. The amount of alcohol required to achieve this differs for men and women. In general, men are considered binge drinkers if they consume five or more alcoholic beverages within two hours. For women, the threshold is four or more. While most people who engage in binge drinking do not have a severe alcohol use disorder, doing so frequently can lead to physical and psychological health issues.
Alcohol abuse occurs when drinking takes precedence, regardless of the known negative consequences. Drinking is considered alcohol abuse when someone continues to drink despite poor job or school performance, neglect of responsibilities, legal issues (such as DWI or more severe problems), new or worsening physical or mental health effects, or loss of relationships. Someone who abuses alcohol does so to feel pleasure or to numb the pain associated with a mental or medical health condition. As drinking becomes more frequent, more and more alcohol is necessary to achieve the desired effects. This process, known as tolerance, significantly increases the risk of developing an alcohol use disorder (alcoholism).
Alcohol dependency, or alcoholism, is characterized by the physical and psychological need to consume alcohol. With alcoholism, the physical cravings for alcohol become so intense that they can be debilitating. As a result, the addict is drinking almost constantly to alleviate the physical discomfort associated with not having alcohol in their system. Additionally, if one tries to reduce or stop drinking at this stage, withdrawal symptoms may occur, and it can be dangerous to do so without the support and guidance of an alcohol treatment program.
The DSM lists eleven criteria that mental health and addiction treatment professionals use to diagnose the severity of an alcohol use disorder. It is not necessary to meet all criteria to meet the diagnostic criteria for alcoholism. Some of the most common symptoms observed in many cases include:
- Drinking alone or making excuses for drinking
- Cognitive difficulties, including blackouts and memory problems
- Prioritizing alcohol over essential responsibilities and obligations
- Increasing self-isolation
- Changes in personal hygiene or appearance

Alcohol Rehabilitation Services in Virginia
If you, or a loved one, are struggling with alcohol addiction, seeking treatment at a rehabilitation center with medically supported detox programs is crucial. Detoxing from alcohol requires the body to adjust to functioning without it, which can lead to unpleasant and challenging withdrawal symptoms. The body and brain become accustomed to functioning with a certain amount of addictive substance in the system, resulting in cravings when the substance levels decrease. This can lead to addicts believing that they need alcohol to function.
Withdrawal symptoms vary in intensity and severity depending on the severity of the addiction. The longer and more frequently the individual drinks to excess, the more challenging withdrawal symptoms can be. While some may experience mild symptoms that can be managed without medical assistance, others may experience dangerous and even life-threatening symptoms and complications. Thus, medically assisted detox is essential, especially at an inpatient alcohol rehab like Arrowwood Addiction Treatment Center in Virginia.
At Arrowwood Addiction Treatment Center, patients can expect medical supervision and care throughout the detox process. Depending on the severity of the addiction, this includes monitoring vital signs, providing emotional and medical support, and administering medications to reduce the intensity of withdrawal symptoms. This high level of care helps to reduce the possibility of dangerous medical complications should more severe withdrawal symptoms occur.
