Alcohol Use Disorders in the United States: Understanding the Scope and Seeking Help
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse reports that approximately 17 million adults in the United States qualify for a diagnosis of an alcohol use disorder. Moreover, close to a million adolescents aged 12-17 also have alcohol use disorders of varying degrees. It’s important to note that alcoholism and alcohol use disorder, as identified in many addiction treatment settings, is not an illness that develops overnight. Unlike other substances that may lead to dependence or addiction after a single use, alcohol use disorders arise from long-term alcohol abuse.
While the occasional drink with friends or a beer with dinner is not a cause for concern for most adults, if finding or consuming alcohol becomes a top priority, then it may be time to seek help from alcohol rehab in Virginia. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), alcohol is one of America’s most commonly abused substances. Each year, alcohol-related causes are responsible for one out of every twenty deaths worldwide, and it is estimated that over 90,000 people in the U.S. die from alcohol-related causes annually. Shockingly, more than 30 of these deaths are due to the effects of alcohol poisoning. SAMHSA also reports that nearly 8% of American adults have an alcohol use disorder, but only a minority of them seek or receive addiction treatment at a Virginia inpatient alcohol rehab.

A Guide to Alcohol Treatment
Understanding Alcohol Addiction and Its Severity
Alcohol addiction is quite different from other drug addictions, as it is not typically caused by a single dose, but rather from prolonged use and abuse. While most people can drink socially without developing an addiction, some individuals may find themselves struggling with unmanageable levels of alcohol. This is when alcohol use disorders or addiction can occur.
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) has categorized alcohol addiction based on eleven diagnostic criteria that addiction treatment providers use to measure its severity. Exhibiting all eleven criteria is not necessary to have an alcohol use disorder. Generally, two or three signs indicate a mild alcohol use disorder, four or five indicate a moderate one and six or more indicate a severe alcohol use disorder.
According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, more than seventeen million American adults have an alcohol use disorder of varying severity. Nine hundred thousand Americans aged twelve to seventeen also have alcohol use disorders. In 2017, nearly six percent of individuals over the age of twelve met the diagnostic criteria for an alcohol use disorder, which jumps to 12.5% if only individuals aged 18-25 are considered.
Individuals with an alcohol use disorder often engage in heavy alcohol use or binge drinking. Although these terms may seem interchangeable, they refer to different ways of abusing alcohol. Binge drinking is when someone drinks more beverages in a short period than their body can process. For men, this means drinking five or more drinks in a two-hour window, while for women, it is four or more drinks. Meanwhile, heavy alcohol use means engaging in binge drinking five or more days within a month.
According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, these two forms of excessive alcohol use are linked to nearly 100,000 deaths each year in the United States. In 2018, the national average of people who engaged in excessive drinking was just over 18%.

Recognizing the Signs and Symptoms of Alcoholism
Understanding Alcohol Addiction: Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Stages
Alcohol addiction is a complex condition that can have a significant impact on an individual’s physical, psychological, and social well-being. To diagnose the presence and severity of alcoholism, mental health, and addiction experts refer to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders. This manual lists eleven criteria that highlight various physical and psychological symptoms of alcohol addiction.
Recognizing the signs and symptoms of alcohol abuse is crucial to ensure early and comprehensive addiction treatment at a reputable alcohol rehab center, such as the Arrowwood Addiction Treatment Center.
While alcohol addiction is unique to each individual, there are common symptoms that often appear in most cases, including:
- Continuing to drink despite physical harm or challenges in family and personal relationships
- Changes in appearance or lack of concern for hygiene
- Increased isolation and distance from friends and family
- Intense and overwhelming urges to drink or experiencing withdrawal symptoms when reducing or stopping alcohol consumption
- Choosing alcohol over essential responsibilities and obligations
- Sudden changes in mood or frequent mood swings
- Drinking alone or making excuses for drinking
- Cognitive changes such as blackouts or difficulties with short-term memory
It is also essential to understand how alcohol addiction develops. Alcoholism is a severe disease that requires professional help to manage. The four stages of alcoholism were defined by researcher E. Morton Jellinek and help us understand alcohol addiction as a disease rather than a moral failure.
As someone progresses through the stages of alcoholism, it becomes increasingly challenging to quit drinking independently. Here are the four stages:
- Stage One: Pre-Alcoholic. In this stage, social drinking is typical, but drinking is often used for other reasons, and tolerance for the effects of alcohol begins to develop.
- Stage Two: Early Alcoholism. The inability to resist drinking is a defining characteristic of this stage. Someone struggling with drinking may lie to their loved ones about how often they drink or why they drink during this stage.
- Stage Three: Middle Alcoholism. Signs of alcoholism become apparent to friends and family. An alcoholic may skip obligations to drink, skip work in favor of drinking, and exhibit behavioral and physical changes linked to alcohol abuse. During stage three, it is not uncommon for someone to try to stop drinking independently, but inevitably relapse.
- Stage Four: Late Alcoholism. In this final stage, severe physical and mental health problems develop due to chronic long-term alcohol abuse. Family, personal, and social relationships begin to fail as drinking becomes a priority.
Seeking help for alcohol addiction can be challenging, but it is essential for recovery. If you or a loved one is struggling with alcohol addiction, reach out to a professional for help today.

Understanding Alcohol Addiction and the Importance of Safe Detox
Alcohol addiction can have severe effects, causing an individual to become heavily reliant on alcohol to get through the day. Life obligations, such as work, child care, and school, become increasingly difficult to manage as alcohol use continues. Attempting to reduce or stop alcohol usage can result in dangerous withdrawal symptoms, which are further complicated by the severity of the addiction.
For a successful detox, it’s best to seek comprehensive, medically supported treatment at an alcohol rehab center. During this process, a team of highly trained medical professionals will provide support and guidance as you progress through the most challenging phases of detox. They will continuously monitor your vitals to ensure detox is safe and effective. After the detox, you can transition into the therapeutic portion of the program, like a holiday treatment program, where you will learn the necessary coping skills to manage triggers and maintain lasting sobriety outside of the addiction treatment setting.
